The Howard G. Buffett foundation is helping to bring agriculture back to the classroom in Omaha, Nebraska. The initiative will use an "academy within a school" format at Bryan High School. Complete with an FFA chapter and many opportunities for students.
Nebraska agriculture director Matt Kreifels says they've had an impressive response to the new program.

LEWISVILLE, Ark. – Six inches of rain have made a change in the landscape along the Red River in southwest Arkansas.

 

“The farmland along the river bottoms, a lot of it looks like lakes,” Joe Vestal, Lafayette County extension staff chair for the University of Arkansas System Division of Agriculture, saidWednesday morning. “It’ll take awhile to get it off the fields,” and that’s where the worry lies.

A new land conservation agreement will protect key wildlife habitat in Wyoming’s Green River Valley. The agreement, which establishes two conservation easements on the Fish Creek Flying W Ranches near Big Piney, was coordinated by the Wyoming Game and Fish Department and The Conservation Fund.

The Rio Grande Basin Initiative project is the first recipient of the NIFA Outstanding Integrated Program Water Resources Team Award. The project addresses water management throughout the Rio Grande Basin , bringing together research, extension, and education efforts to address local, state, regional, national, and international water concerns. Improved precision irrigation techniques and scheduling, developed and extended through this integrated project, have conserved more than 200,000 acre-feet of water per year.

LITTLE ROCK – A weakening La Niña may bring heavy rain and the threat of flash floods to parts of Arkansas this spring, while the potential for widespread flooding remains average, the National Weather Service said Thursday.

“Weakening La Niña conditions are occurring, which can produce a period of early spring severe weather in Arkansas,” the weather service said in its spring flood potential outlook. “Impressive quantities of rainfall can occur in a short period … localized high intensity rainfall can create flash flooding at any time, even during times of drought.”

WASHINGTON, D.C., March 8, 2012 – The latest survey of participants in the American Farm Bureau Federation’s Young Farmers & Ranchers program shows an even split when it comes to concerns about top challenges they face today. A total of 21 percent of young farmers surveyed ranked burdensome government regulations and “red tape” as a top concern; an additional 21 percent cited securing adequate land to grow crops and raise livestock as their top challenge today.

Verizon Launching Rural Wireless Broadband In Dallas, Nashville, & Birmingham Areas

Verizon Wireless on Tuesday announced a version of its wireless broadband service that's designed for use in rural and remote homes that can't get DSL or cable. The service, called HomeFusion, could also appeal to some households where DSL is the only fixed-line option, since it's faster than most DSL services. HomeFusion could provide potent competition for satellite broadband providers, which are often "providers of last resort" for rural homes. The service requires the installation of a cylindrical antenna, about the size of a 5-gallon bucket, on an outside wall.

Michael Scuse, USDA’s Under Secretary, Farm and Foreign Agriculture Services announced the next targeted enrollment for the CRP program starts on Friday, March 2nd and ends on April 6th at your FSA office. “Your FSA office will help you if you are not sure if your land qualifies or how much will qualify. That is what the FSA office is for, just ask.” Scuse added that there is an ongoing program for “highly erodible land” that is on-going.

The crowd was so big, the Senate Agriculture Committee moved the first hearing on the writing of the new five year Farm Bill to the largest hearing room in the Senate. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack testified that he wants the Farm Bill to help bring jobs and economic viability to rural in many ways. He wants bio-based economy that will allow producers to grow non-food stocks for renewable bio fuels. He also said that refineries for bio fuels will, for the most part, be located in rural America and be spread across the whole country.

USDA Pegs 2012 Corn at 94 Million Acres

OMAHA (DTN) -- Farmers are expected to plant 94 million acres of corn this coming crop year, according to USDA's baseline estimates released Monday morning. That's near the low end; some private estimates put corn acreage as high as 96 million acres. USDA also maintained that corn would follow trendline yields and hit 164 bushels per acre in 2012.
